Former St. George's Cinema - Castlegate

Following on from the theme of the day before yesterday this is also a former Cinema entrance, the St. George's cinema in Castlegate now used as a display annex for Fairfax House which is next door.

This was actually used to be the St. Georges cinema, not the Tower. The Tower cinema used to stand in New Street (off Coney Street) and was bulldozed in 1967.

How on earth did I get the wrong label on that one? I know I didn't feel comfortable as I typed in the Tower. Thinking back hard I can just about visualise in my mind, the Tower Cinema in New Street. Thanks for pointing it out and for your comment on the furniture store in Fossgate, formerly the "The Electric" cinema, a wonderful building and well desrving of being a listed building..

I have corrected the information here.

Is this what used to be known as St Georges Hall? i'm trying to locate where the old NAAFI used to be during WW2. It's listed as St Georges Hall Castlegate in the US forces Guide.

Could well be, Fairfax House was bought in 1919 by the "St George's Hall Cinema Company" in 1919. Whether the cinema or Fairfax House is the building you are looking for I can't really tell. You might like to look at this article from the York Press site.

Looks like it was what is now known as Fairfax House. See the following article on the History of York site.

Excellent, I think it was this place...the booklet was published for the US forces based here, in about 1942. There's a long list of all the venues used as canteens and hostels. What must the Americans have thought of York?
Thanks for an excellent website.
