Hungate Outdoor Art Update

The outdoor art from primary schools has been changed recently and these photos show the new pictures. Notice the slow progress on the buildings in the background, but progress no the less! I notice that my last blog on the outdoor art in Hungate was back in March this year so there may have been several changes in the intervening months, apologies for missing them if I did.

Calverts Carpets - Stonebow

This is a great little carpet warehouse where you can pick up reasonably priced end of roll pieces if you are willing to wait for the right piece to turn up for you. Although the building is similar in style to York's ugliest building which you can just see in the background it is softened slightly by the lower brick level which almost makes it appealing. Prior to Calverts taking the building on it was the the home of Pickles Newspaper wholesalers. Next door to it is building work going on where one of the modern timber structured buildings is being erected. I don't think I have seen any artists impression drawings of what is being erected but hope it is going to be better than the proposed council office over the road which from the artists impression is going to be a monstrosity to rival Stonebow House.

Hungate Outdoor Art

This seems a smart idea to me to reduce the likelihood of getting graffiti on these hoardings on the Hungate development site. The council have organised for school youngsters to create this outdoor art. It reserves the space and taggers seem to respect that somebody elses work is there. Or maybe it is just that this part of Hungate is a bit off the beaten track.

Doors Within The Walls 7 - Black Swan Peaseholme Green

The Black Swan door has a solid oak look to it and of course is open most of the time during the day until closing time. A popular non-mainstream music venue with Jazz and Folk evenings the Black Swan is a .

There is currently some controversy about the planned council offices that are planned to be erected next door to it. Many are describing the proposed building as a monstrosity. Even Coun Brian Watson, who will become York's next Lord Mayor in May has joined the fray describing the planned offices in the same terms. About the only councillor heard defending is the present Mayor Coun. Steve Galloway. My own view is that if the artists impression looks as bad as it does then the actual building will be hideous and be a contender for Stonebows House's crown as the Ugliest Building in York. The city of York deserves better than this.
