Doors Within The Walls - St Wilfred's Church

The door of St. Wilfred's church in Duncombe place always fascinates me. It always looks a spendidly ornate fancy cake.

Doors within the walls 23 - St Michael Le Belfrey Church

I have waited for months to get an oppurtunity to photograph this door without a vehicle parked in front of it or them being open. St. Michael Le Belfrey stands in the shadow of York Minster but is an interesting church in its own right despite it being ignored by most visitors who are making their way to the Minster.

Doors within the walls 22 - St Cuthbert Church

St Cuthbert's in Peaseholme Green now used as an admin centre for ST Michael Le Belfrey church has tenuouos links with General Wolfe of Quebec. His parents worshipped in this church whilst they stayed in the Black Swan Inn across the road. The Black Swan is considered as being the likeliest place where General Wolfe was conceived!

Doors within the walls 21 -St Crux Church

Caught early in the morning before the doors were opened. St Crux is just next to Marks and Spencer on The Pavement next to Whip Ma Whop Ma Gate. The church is used regularly for charity jumble sales and coffee mornings.

Doors within the walls 20 - Friargate House

Just on the edge of Castlegate is this interesting door to Friargate House on the corner of Friargate and Castlegate next to the Friends Meeting Houose.

Doors within the walls 19 - 11 Castlegate

Castlegate is another of York's streets with a wealth of interesting doors. Her is number 11 Castlegate with a fine stone surround.

Doors within the walls 18 - 18 St. Saviourgate

As mentioned yesterday, St. Saviourgate is a honeypot of interesting doors. So, here is another gem from that street.

Doors within the walls 17 - 29 St Saviourgate

St. Saviourgate is a street full of interesting doors yet hardly anybody walks along that street. The closest most tourists will get is to come out of Colliergate or Whip Ma Whop Ma Gate into St. Saviourgate to visit Dig. What a treat they are missing.

Doors within the walls 15 - Side door St. Wilfred's

By comparison with the front door, the side door may seem a little plain. However, if it was considered by itself I am sure most would agree that it is in fact a fairly ornate door and out of the ordinary.

Doors within the walls 14 - St. Wilfred's Church

Having shown a photo of St Wilfred's a couple of days ago I had to include a closer look at the ornate doorway into the church.

Doors within the walls 13 - Georgian building next to Bank Blake Street

The solicitors in this building have moved and the name plates next to the pillars have been removed.

Doors within the walls 12 - Barclays Bank, Parliament Street

This wonderfully ornate doorway is the entrance into Barclays bank from Parliament Street.

Doors within the walls 10 - Coffee Yard

Although this door in Coffee Yard is in good painted condition it could do with a good wash down as it is covered in dust splashes and cobwebs.

Doors within the walls 9 - 17 Aldwark

I am fairly certain that the most interesting doors in York are on Georgian Houses. This splendid example can be found at 17 Aldwark near the Merchant Taylors' Hall.

Doors within the walls 8 - Merchant Taylors Hall

The fraternity of St John the Baptist related to the Taylor's Guild were reponsible for building the hall in the 14th century. However, the 14th century origins of this building are masked by a 17th century brick cladding. The Taylor's Guild received a Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1661. Inside the building is a wonderful vaulted ceiling with exposed woodwork. There is also a beautiful wooden floor and some excellent painted windows. Unfortunately, the hall is not open to the public and the only way that you can see inside is if you attend a function at the hall.

Doors within the walls 6 - 31 Skeldergate

This door is located at the Skeldergate Bridge end of Skelderagte opposite the Bonding Warehouse.

Doors within the walls 5 - St. Sampsons Over 60s

I was in town early the other morning and happened to catch the Over 60s centre before it was opened and noticed the rather splendidly decorated door. The arch above the door is interesting the way it ends in two square blocks. No doubt I'll find out names for them in the online Proberts Encyclopedia I;m working through at the moment.

Doors within the walls 4 - 22 St. Saviorgate

St. Saviourgate is rich in interesting architecture and has some wonderful doors in the Georgian Terraces. I wish I knew more architectural terminology so that I could be more descriptive about the architecture. I have been looking at the online Probert Encyclopedia which has a complete section devoted to architectural terminology and there is a lot to it.

Points I think are of interest for this address are the foot scraper hole at the bottom left where the metalwork scraper is missing, the glass lights above the door divided into three panes, the concave depression on the vertical capitals framing the door and the decoration on the archtrave picked out in gold.

Doors within the walls 3 - Mansion House

This is probably one of the grandest doors in York. The Mansion House is the residnce of the York Mayor when he is in office and can be found at the top of Coney Street overlooking St. Helens Square.

Doors Within The Walls 2 - 20 St. Andrewgate

Just a little way from the side entrance of Barnitts along St. Andrewgate is this magnificent door that I just could not resist taking a photo of.
