In the bar some wonderful tiles were uncovered under layers of wall paper and paint the motif stretches across the width of the bar.
The walls above the picture rail are adorned with "sets of three" including the common set of three flying mallards. There are also flying pigs, geese, frogs, plump ladies diving into water and dolphins. Probably the most valuable of these is the flying Guuiness Toucans. The pub is also worth a visit for the beer which is well kept and served by pleasant staff.

hi jollygreenp,
when we visited york that year, my elder girl was very keen on joining the ghost trail of york. somehow we managed to talk her out of it. is it worthwhile to join this kind of tour?
just to let you know that i have moved on to http://ivyidaong4.blogspot.com
Hello yg,
there are several of them and most people that go on one seem to enjoy it. I think that the main thing to bear in mind is to treat it all as a bit of fun. The ghost walk that starts from the top of the Shambles usually starts off with a lot of banter and humour. During the summer months the Morris group that I dance with perform in King's Square on Monday nights and we would take a break as the ghost tour started. The emphasis with this particular walk is certainly fun but you have to have an appreciation of Yorkshire humour, one part of the script was " are there any pensioners? sorry love, we have to charge you double price because you walk so slow!" Most of the ghosts on the tour are certainly well documented like the one that was seen of group of Roman Legionaires walking through the cellar of Treasurer's House. The interesting thing about this sighting was that the knees were level with the cellar floor and this corresponds with the level of the Roman road that passes under neath the cellar. I have seen any of these ghosts and remain sceptical on the subject but have met people who are convinced that they have seen ghosts.
So in summary, you pays your money and takes your chance but go into it in the spirit (no pun intended) of fun.
thanks for the interesting information.
Who are all the old men in the "Golden Ball" picture please? They all look very gentle people.
