Dear Jollygreenp
My name is Pandu Harimurti, and I am an Indonesian and had been to York in Spring 2004 for a shortcourse at the University of York. Your pictures revive magnificent time I had. I had been dreaming to go to York because I'm a huge fan of James Herriot (I'm wondering why you don't have any pictures of Thirsk though), and the time I spent in York was definitely one of the best moments in my life. I'd like to ask for a favor though. When I was there I went to small town which is not too far from Castle Howard and it has stunning view of a river, down in a valley, and a tall train stonebridge across it. I have been trying to recall the name of the place with no avail but I do have a picture of it and maybe you could help me identifying the site, unfortunately I don't know how to send it to you via this blog. My email address is pharimurti@gmail.com, and I'd really appreciate your time and help to solve this mistery.
Best regards

Hi Pandu,
nice to hear from you. The town you are describing is probably Knaresborough, next to Harrogate. It is famous for Mother Shipton's cave, where you can hang items up where they will become calcified in the water draining onto them that has drained through limestone. The view from the railway bridge as you leave Knaresborough towards Harrogate is probably the scene you are describing and is probably one of the most spectacular in the area. It is certainly one that still gives me a thrill even though I have lived here for nearly fifty years.
I don't have any photos of Thirsk as I have not visited there for many years. Since the A19 road was diverted around the town I tend to pass the town. Perhaps I night give it a visit one day soon.
I was recently in Indonesia (November last year) visiting Jakarta and Jogjakarta. I didn't really like Jakarta, too busy for me but really enjoyed Jogja, from there we visited the temples at Borobadur and Prambanan and then the Dieng plateau before we flew back to Singapore where I have been a regular visitor since living there for two years when I was a youngster.
