You can see the ancient ice house from the city walls not far from Monk Bar as you walk along the walls towards Jewbury and Foss Islands. For a view from ground level turn into the yard of the public house next to Monk Bar and walk through the beer garden. As the name suggests this building was used to store ice for food preservation purposes before the days of fridges.

Hmm... interesting. The shape of the ice house looks surprisingly similar to the ice houses of the eskimos today.
Hi Victor, the shape has intruiged me for years there is probably some physics involved in why that shape is used and probably related to thermal efficiency. I would have to look it up though, maybe take a look on Wikipedia to see if there is a reason shown there as to why the shapes are similar.
