Ogleforth - The Dutch House

This little architectural gem is about to be swamped by a block of flats. Granting of planning permission for the block by the council is considered an act of wanton disregard of the historic feel of Ogleforth. The Dutch house is on the front left of this view along Ogleforth from Goodramgate.

Thank you for sharing your views of York (my birthplace). I recently visited the city to find Ogleforth as I have found from census returns that my great great great grandfather had a blacksmiths works one one side of the street and lived in the house opposite. His son took over the works on his retirement and the business must have been quite important as he employed several men. It was brilliant seeing the pictures online as when I visited someone decided to park their car on the double lines so I couldn't get a decent shot of the house. Thanks again.

Hey Tubbs, your great great great grandfather was my great great great grandfather's neighbour and they must have known each other well. My ancestor was Richard Blakeborough a bootmaker living at 6 Ogleforth for at least 40 years from 1861 to 1901.

Wow, the power of blogging to bring ancestral neighbours together!

Now that the building work around the Dutch House is further on I have to admit that it ties in reasonably well with the surroundings and is nothing like the act of wanton disregard of the historic feel of Ogleforth I quoted. Hope the work on the other side turns out as well as this first stage.
