Strange how in the UK we do not eat horse any more. I enjoyed horse whilst I was working in Switzerland and do have to admit that it is something I miss! So what does eating horses have to do with Fishergate Postern? Well, during excavations the remains of three horses were found that had been dumped there by a fellmonger (horse butcher). The tower built between 1504-07 replaced an earlier tower called the Talkan Tower. A small posterngate next to the tower was known as "posternam iuxta Skarletpit", meaning the posterngate next to the scarlet pit perhaps reflecting the dumping of horse butchery parts.
