Minster School from Queen's Path

The red painted facade of the Minster School dominates the view on the right hand side of the Queen's Path along the side of the Minster heading towards St William's College. The Queen's Path is so called because it was along this path pensioners of the city were presented with Maundy Money by the Queen on Maundy Thursday in 1972. The number of coins given each year is equal to the age of the monarch. The oldest recipient of Maundy Money from the Queen was Kathleen Grimwood at the age of 107 at St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds in 2009.

York Minster - South Side

Following Ruby's posting on York Daily Photo yesterday I looked through my own blogs on York Minster thinking that I had used this photo at some time and could not find ia blog with it. in So here it is, almost the whole of the west side of the Minster taken from beside the railings of the Minster School. Years ago, pupils at the Minster Schol used to wear red caps but I haven't seen a red cap in ages. Have they abandoned that part of the unform? This section of road used to be open to traffic and took a heavy load as part of the route between Leeds and Scarborough. During the summer and bank holidays the road would be nose to tail with traffic with several bottlenecks like the lights at Monk Bar, the junction by the Assembly Rooms and the junction by the Yorkshire Insurance (Norwich Union) building.

Minster School

This building next to the Minster stoneyard used to be the York College for Girls but was taken over by the Minster School who also have a smaller building over the road. Boys attending the school were for many years very conspicuous by the red caps that they wore. Not sure if they still wear red caps, I haven't noticed lately. At one time the Minster School was always referred to as the Minster Song School but song seems to have dropped out of the title, if it was ever really there.
